Experts in every field, including farm fields
Farm insurance brings together home, commercial property, liability and farm-specific coverage to safeguard your farming operation, personal property and livelihood.
Coverage built around your operation
Key areas of farm insurance coverage
Every farm is different. A policy can be customized to reflect your operation’s size, property, machinery, animals and production, with coverage for the risks that matter most.
Farm property insurance
Coverage can include barns, arenas, storage structures, greenhouses, processing facilities, outbuildings, your home and other structures essential to your farm.
Equipment breakdown
This coverage can help pay to repair or replace essential farm equipment following an unexpected mechanical or electrical breakdown.
Livestock and animal mortality coverage
Coverage can respond when insured horses, cattle, poultry or other livestock are injured, become ill or die, including while on the farm or in transit.
Farm liability
Liability coverage can respond if your farming activities, equipment or animals cause third-party bodily injury or property damage.
Pollution coverage
Pollution insurance may help cover eligible clean-up costs arising from a covered pollution incident connected to your farm operation.
Business interruption insurance
If a covered event such as a building fire temporarily shuts down your operation, this insurance can help cover essential ongoing expenses.

“Review the limit on your outbuildings. If your policy is based on replacement cost, you’ll need to factor in rising construction costs to ensure your coverage limit is enough to replace the building entirely.” – Amanda Stannard, Team Leader, Agriculture Insurance
“Farm insurance is unique to your specific farming operations. Contact your Acera Insurance advisor to review if you have a change in your farming, added equipment or farm animals to make sure you have the best available coverage.” – Tammy Sali, Team Leader, Agriculture & Equine Insurance
“Every six months, take some time to walk through your home, shop, barn, and other buildings on your property and take photos &/or videos of your belongings. Documenting your equipment, tools, vehicles, artwork, jewelry, and other valuables can be extremely helpful if you ever need to file an insurance claim, as it can jog your memory and provide proof of what you owned. It's also a great opportunity to review whether your insurance coverage is still adequate. If you've purchased new equipment, acquired valuable items, or made improvements to your property since your last review, it may be time to contact your broker and update your policy to ensure you have the right coverage in place.” – Kendra Sommerville, Account Executive, Agriculture Insurance

Farm vehicles are used very differently than a personal or normal commercial vehicle:
- They are often driven fewer kilometres
- They are often only operated on a farm
- They may have special equipment or attachments
This means farm vehicles may require unique coverage and may qualify for special rates. Otherwise, farm vehicle insurance is like a regular auto policy. You’re required to carry a certain amount of third-party liability, accident benefits and direct compensation for property damage coverage.
Our advisors are specialists in private and public auto insurance (including ICBC in British Columbia). Speak with a member of our team to learn how best to insure your farm vehicles.
Farm insurance is designed to minimize the financial impact of an unexpected disaster. It helps cover the costs of situations you couldn’t afford to pay for out of your own pocket. Most parts of farm insurance are not mandatory in Western Canada, however, you may be required to carry:
- Third-party liability, direct compensation for property damage and accident benefits coverage on vehicles
- Worker’s Compensation coverage if you have employees
- Property damage coverage on leased or financed equipment
Some contracts may also require you to carry certain types and amounts of insurance (usually liability coverage). All other coverage is optional but is recommended if you could not afford to repair or replace what was lost out of your own pocket.
Farm insurance is customizable based on the size and type of operation, whether you own a hobby farm or a large commercial enterprise. Depending on your needs, your farm insurance may be:
- Endorsements added onto a home policy
- A single farm insurance policy
- Multiple policies and endorsements that work together to protect your farm
